Practical English as a Second Language Program (Ages 16 and up)
The main emphases of the Practical ESL program are communication and functional English for daily life. Practical ESL programs begin weekly year round. The minimum class size is 6, the average is 8 and the maximum is 12. IGK guarantees a very personalized, fast paced and dynamic approach to language learning. The majority of students gain fluency in 24 weeks or less depending on their entry level. Request an entry level test to gauge your course duration before you apply. Students can enroll in executive, full or part time programs from 1 to 24 weeks.
Full Time – Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. 30 hours per week (includes 1 hour of private tutoring per day from 3:00-4:00pm)
Monday-Friday 9:00am – 2:55pm 25 hours per week
Monday-Friday 9:00am – 12:00noon 15 hours per week
Monday-Friday 12:45pm – 2:55pm 10 hours per week
Five levels of Practical ESL are offered from Beginner to Advanced which focus on the combined skills of reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, listening and speaking. Northstar and Headway are the main textbooks.
Students choose one elective from a variety of afternoon electives depending on their level and interest. Conversation, Canadian Culture and IELTS exam preparation are the most popular electives. Field trips are incorporated into some electives to reinforce ‘real life’ language practice. *Notes *Each student will be given a placement test on the first day of class to determine their level. *Homework requirements vary with the level and with the elective but students can expect 30 minutes to 1 hour of homework each day. There are weekly quizzes and tests. *Not all electives or levels may be offered at one time. A minimum of 6 students is required to run any given elective or level. Contact IGK for a current selection. *Ages 12-15 can enroll in part time morning Practical ESL from June to August only. IGK homestay placements are unavailable for part time minors. It is strongly recommended that students aged 12-15 enroll in IGK’s all inclusive Youth Vacation Program which runs from June to August.

IELTS Exam Preparation (Ages 16 and up)
The course provides an overview of the IELTS general training and academic modules, test strategies and practice for the reading, writing, speaking and listening parts of the exams. The course is offered as an afternoon elective on select dates in March and September for 4 or 8 weeks. This is an ideal course for students with an Intermediate-Advanced level of English looking to become familiar with the tests, while increasing their confidence and chances of achieving an outstanding result! In Canada, the IELTS General Training exam is mainly used for non-academic training, work experience and immigration purposes while the Academic exam is used to gain entrance to higher education. The General and Academic exams are available in Kelowna on select dates. Ask for details. Intermediate to Advanced level
TESOL Certificate Program (Ages 19 and up)
This 120 hour (2 week ) certificate program prepares participants to teach both adults and children. The program is composed of 30 hours of pre class assignment, 50 hours in class time and 40 hours of homework and assignments during class time. A 25 hour optional practicum is also available at IGK upon completion of the program. This program is open to both international students and Canadians. High School Pathways (Ages 12 to 18)
The High School Pathways program begins weekly year round for ages 15-18 (5 to 24 weeks) and weekly from June to August for ages 12-14 (5 to 12 weeks). First, students enroll in full time Practical ESL (ages 15-18) or the Youth Vacation Program (ages 12-18) at IGK. Upon completion of these programs students are ready to transfer to one of our partner high schools, Studio 9 School of the Arts, Immaculata Regional High School or Aberdeen Hall Preparatory School. Studio 9 accepts international students in September and January for Grades 8 through 12 for a school year or one term. Studio 9 is a K-12, non-denomination private school in Kelowna with an Arts and Fine Arts focus. Studio 9 does not accept international students without a High School Pathways program at IGK. Studio 9’s student body is 99% Canadian with international students transferring from IGK exclusively. Immaculata is a private Catholic school established in 1960 and accepts students in Grades 8-12 transferring from IGK in September or January. Aberdeen Hall is a K-12 non-denominational, private university preparatory school with some of the best test scores and sports facilities in the region. Aberdeen Hall accepts students in Grades 8-12 transferring from IGK in September for a school year. (See attached program details) All levels
Family ESL and Holiday Program
Learn English and have a family holiday at the same time! Adults, teens and young learners take English classes in the morning either together as a family group or in separate classes. If taking classes separately the following options are available for the accompanying youth: With an IGK homestay Full time Youth Vacation Program – June to August – ages 8-18 Full time Practical ESL – starting weekly year round – ages 16 and up Full time ESL + High School Experience – September to May – ages 12-16 Without an IGK homestay Part Time Practical ESL (mornings only) – June to August – ages 8-18 Full or part time Practical ESL – starting weekly year round – ages 16 and up Families may wish to plan their own afternoon adventures and only take morning classes. Welcome packs include maps and sightseeing information with suggestions for afternoon and weekend trips. Accommodation options include homestay, hotel or motel. Private Tutoring (Ages 16 and up)
One to one lessons: Practical ESL, TOEIC, IELTS, LPI and Cambridge exam preparation as well as Conversation, Writing, Pronunciation and Accent Reduction. Spanish: Beginner and Intermediate levels All levels
Bartending Certificate/Wine Foundation Program (Ages 19 and up)
Bartending certification program; this 28 hour daytime or evening course is offered twice a month. All of the training is ‘hands on’ and is done behind a real working bar. Bartending programs provide a job ready skill for students to use both at home and abroad. Working Holiday/Canada Experience students gain a marketable skill which they can use to secure high paying jobs in Kelowna. A two day Wine Foundation Program is also available for groups of 4 or more. Participants learn about wine tasting and wine terminology.
